This idea first emerged from our Parent Advisory Council that suggested ending early to provide relief to weary families who are juggling disrupted work lives, suddenly supporting learning at home, and more. As I considered this feedback and listened to concerns about learning loss in students and training needs for our teachers, I identified this time as essential to help us prepare to serve your children when we reopen in August. I shared with the Board that during this final week for teachers, they will: Finish year end work: report cards, class lists etc. Identify a plan to help each student recover lost learning this quarter; and Build their skills to teach in an online environment. Your schools will share details about returning Chromebooks and other year-end activities. We will continue to provide free meals through the end of June and we’re working on the plan for our traditional summer feeding program. I want to thank all of you for providing feedback on our survey. We are using it to shape our plans for next year. Past Updates May 1, 2020 May 1, 2020 May 1. 2020 Kuna families - Welcome to the start of the final month of an unusual school year! I am excited to see the health of our community is improving, and our state is beginning to safely reopen. I appreciate Governor Little’s phased approach to reopen, but recognize it means our school buildings will not reopen, and we will finish the year in emergency distance education. In the midst of finishing this school year strong, we are also preparing for next year’s school year. This may mean welcoming back students to our classrooms should health conditions continue to improve in our community as well as other scenarios should conditions decline. In the next few days, we’ll ask you to complete a survey. We want to know what worked well this spring and what didn’t. We also want to know what options should be available if another long-term emergency closure is necessary to keep our community safe. As we enter our final month of the school year some updates: K-3 Parents: Idaho Reading Indicator As you know, the state requires students in kindergarten through third grade take the Idaho Reading Indicator (IRI) in fall and in spring. The State Board of Education was not able to waive this requirement because it is a state law and would need legislative action. Recognizing that many students would not be able to securely take a computer-based test from home, the Board did set aside its accountability requirements for students and schools that are tied to the IRI. What does that mean for us? Some students will take the IRI, some won’t, and that’s OK because the state won’t collect, report, or use the results. Some students will take the test because they are using the iStation online program to practice skills. The state also uses iStation to test students. When a student logs in for the first time in May, they’ll take an assessment, which is the IRI. The test doesn...
